Ahmednagar

History

Ahmednagar was founded by Ahmad Nizam Shah 1 and so the name Ahmednagar. The city is said to have been built on an ancient city - Bhingar named after the famous Hindu saint Bhringu. This city is also known as the City of Saints was conquered by famous Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and the last Mughal emperor spent his last few years in the region. Later the Nizams of Hyderabad, Peshwas of Marathas, and also the British ruled over the region. The Marathas are said to have ruled for almost 50 years on the city. The Ahmednagar Fort is famous as the Great Indian leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawahar Lal Nehru were imprisoned in this fort. The British ruled over the place for a considerable time and converted Ahmednagar into a garrison.

Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra is about 120 km east of Pune and 114 km from Aurangabad. The town has been a major military base with important armed forces centres located in the city. The town is also home to the training and recruitment for the Indian Army Armoured Corps. The town is also famous for its 19 sugar factories. This historical city has several sites to visit. Ahmednagar Fort being the most famous, the fort also houses a museum with artefacts of the Mughal Dynasty. Chand Bibi Palace, Baugh Raza and the tomb of Meher Baba are some popular places. Renuka Goddess, Vishal Ganapati Temple, and the famous Sai Baba Temple at Shirdi are visited by millions of devotees throughout the year. Shani Shignapuur a small place 35 kilometers away has devotees from all over r the country all the year round. Pimpri Gawali Village 25 away from the town ha lately been in news for its agribusiness activities. This village is a model for the participatory approach with the farmers. Ahmednagar has a majority of Hindus but Muslims also have a huge presence here.
