History

The name of the city of Jabalpur comes from the Arabic Jabal (which means mountain) and from the Sanskrit Pura (which means city). Historically, the city was the center of the Kalachuri and Gond dynasties, and under the influence of the intermittent Mughal and Maratha dynasties, it developed a culture of fusion. In the early 19th century, British India annexed it as the Jubbulpore and used it as a camp.
Jabalpur is not only famous for its political, religious, and social aspects, but also the legendary Queen Rani Durgawati who belonged to the Gower Dynasty and played an important role in the establishment of Jabalpur. In the battle with the Mughals, her son "Virnarayan" was martyred. His self-sacrifice to defend his homeland is a rare event in Indian history. Durgawati, in order to commemorate the picturesque Madansha on the mountain, built what is now known as Madan Fort.

Facts & Culture

Jabalpur is located in the Mahakoshal region of central India, adjacent to the sacred Narmada River. Jabalpur has a world-famous temple called "Chausath Yogni" with 64 goddesses in total, where you can see the amazing Yoginian sculptures. One of the oldest rocks in the world is the Lamhetaghat rock found near Bhedaghat. Lamhetaghat is so named because it is approximately 50 million years old and is designated as "Lamhetite" in the geological language of the world.  The Dussehra, Deepawali, and Holi are the famous festivals that people celebrate, and it is enlightening to see the city during this period. The popular dance forms in the city are Matki, Phulpati, and Giridaand. Nomads are those people who practice these dance forms. These are also known as Kanjars and Banjaras. The main population of Jabalpur and its surrounding areas is the Gund tribal community.
