Locals refer to Durpin Dara and Deolo Dara as the two hills on which Kalimpong sits, with a ridge separating them. Located to the west of the town, the hill rises to an elevation of 1,372 metres (4,501 feet). Views of Kalimpong, the snow-capped West Sikkim Himalayas, the Teesta River Valley, and the Jelepla Pass can be seen from the top of the peak. Near the peak, there is a golf course as well. The Zang Dhok Palri Monastery, perched atop the hill, was dedicated by the Dalai Lama in 1976 and is open to the public. There are 108 volumes of the kangyur and other sacred books and scrolls in the monastery's reliquary that were taken from Tibet by the Chinese following their conquest. Because of its proximity to the international boundary, the Indian Army maintains a large base atop Durpin Hill. The Indian Army built a helipad near the monastery.
