Kanchipuram's skyline is dominated by the enormous 'Gopuram' of his enormous temple complex. Tourists flock to this town because it is one of India's top seven pilgrimage sites. Lord Vishnu's Vamana Murthy shrine is placed within the temple premises rather than a separate shrine for Parvati.A Prithvi Lingam made of sand from under a mango tree is said to have been used by Parvati to worship Shiva. However, the nearby Vegavati River was inundated, posing a threat to the lingam's survival. Parvati is said to have cradled the lingam in her arms in order to keep it safe. In response to this gesture, Shiva appeared to her and proposed to her in person, and they were married.
