History
The Edward Elliot Beach is named after a former Chief Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Edward Elliot, and is located south of Marina Beach. Hugh Elliot, Governor of Madras, was his father. It was a popular spot for British colonists to relax on the beach. To honour a Dutch hero, Karl Schmidt, who is rumoured to have died while saving a drowning girl in 1930, the Karl Schmidt Memorial was created on the shore. Due to its shaky foundation and the impacts of the ocean water, the sole architectural monument constructed on the beach by the then Governor of Madras, Lieutenant Colonel Sir George Frederick Stanley, was severely destroyed. It had a major renovation in 2014, with the addition of a granite and brick foundation. The inscription on the memorial stone reads, "To honour the Gallantry of K A J Schmidt who was killed near this site on December 30, 1930 while aiding others."
