History

The Ashtalakshmi Temple was built area overlooking the Bay of Bengal that is believed to be the birthplace of the goddess Lakshmi. According to the ancient Vedas, when the sea was devastated by Deva and Asura during the Samudra Manthan, the goddess Lakshmi appeared, endowing her followers with wealth and prosperity. Mahavishnu, who married the goddess Lakshmi, also married eight forms of the goddess Lakshmi, and it is believed that they live together in the temple. Therefore, the name is Ashtalakshmi (8 forms of Lakshmi). This complex was built to represent the shape of Ohm(one of the most sacred symbols for Hindus). This ancient temple was built according to the "Ashtangavimana (8 parts)" style. Ashtalakshmi Temple consists of four levels. Each floor consists of Lord Vishnu's avatars(incarnations) in different postures, standing, sitting, and resting. The temple also consists of a 5.5-foot golden kalasam (pot) in the sanctuary that holds the idols of Mahalaxmi and Mahavishnu as the supreme deities of the temple, and 32 newly installed kalasams. The constant roar of sea waves echoes throughout the temple complex, instantly giving it an aura of peace.
