Sikkim's main city of Gangtok, Enchey Monastery was built in 1909 above the Enchey Hills. Nyingma Vajrayana Buddhism is the Nyingma order. Gangtok's monastery, erected around a tiny hamlet at the time, became a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists. After flying from Maenam Hill in South Sikkim, Lama Drupthob Karpo, a tantric master with flying skills, erected a tiny Gompa at this spot. The "Solitary Monastery" is the literal meaning of Enchey Monastery. Its sanctity is due to the widespread belief that the guardian deities Khangchendzonga and Yabdean live here. Guru Padmasambhava is said to have subjugated the spirits of Khangchendzonga, Yabdean, and Mahkhala here, according to mythology. With this narrative, the significance of Enchey Monastery in Gangtok is etched in the minds of everyone in the village. The worshipers of these great deities are also said to think that they always fulfil their requests.
