It was established in 1946 by the 14th Dalai Lama's guru, Trulshik Rinpoche, in Gangtok town. Vajrakilaya, or Dorjee Rinpoche, is a significant deity in the Nyigma Order of Tibetan Buddhism, and the stupa's pearly white dome is devoted to him. There are 108 prayer wheels with sacred mantras etched on them surrounding the stupa. There are a number of priceless Dorje Phurba-related writings and treasures carefully maintained within. Dorjee Rinpoche's and Zurma's mantra mandala sets are included. Additionally, there are other smaller stupas, among them Jang Jhap Chorten (dedicated to the Trulshik Rinpoche) in the complex. The Chorten Lakhang region of the stupa is home to two enormous sculptures of Guru Padmasambhava. Tourists and monks from the adjacent Tibetology institute frequently visit the complex.
