History
The Handloom and Handicrafts Centre of Sikkim, established in 1957, was recently renamed the Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom. Only a quarter of a mile separates the museum from Gangtok's bustling main market. As the Government Institute of Cottage Industries, it is also referred to (GICI). When the Chogyals of Sikkim ruled, they established the museum there. The museum was founded with the goal of preserving and promoting the abilities of local artists and craftspeople. The museum's collection of handicrafts and looms is authentic and well-preserved. Many traditional items, like as carpets, blankets, and shawls, are on display, including beautiful "choktse," "thangka," and other paintings, as well as masks, dolls, and other hand-painted items. A wide range of designs and textures may be seen on the museum's carpets, from modern to traditional. Handmade paper created from the bark of the algeri tree is another unique product.
