As the most popular tourist attraction in Kota, the Kota Garh Museum is located amid the sprawling palace complex on the Chambal River's banks in South-East Rajasthan. Over time, as the city grew, three concentric walls encircled the original city. In the early nineteenth century, the Dewan Zalim Singh erected the thickest and most current set of fortifications in India. The fort's origin can be dated back to 1264, and the state of Kotah was established as a distinct entity from Bundi in 1624 when Rao Madho Singh became the ruler. On the initiative of M.K. Brijraj Singh, under his father Maharao Bhim Singh, a trust was established in 1970 with the goal of creating and preserving the history of Kotah State through the establishment of a museum. (Kotah is spelled with an 'h' by the State and Royal Family, although contemporary Kota is spelled without one.)
