History

The Gobindgarh Fort, which has 43 acres of land and is located in the heart of the Holy City along the Grand Trunk Road, is the quintessential representation of Punjab and the iconic guardian of Amritsar. The history of this beautiful historical monument spans more than 300 years, beginning with the Bhangi Misl, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the East India Company, and the Indian Army. The doors of this qilla have been officially opened, welcoming not only the residents of Punjab but also all of the pilgrims and visitors who come to pay their respects to Shri Harmandir Sahib. The fort formerly served as a home to the renowned Kohinoor diamond. The qilla is now undergoing progressive restoration in an effort to bring it back to its former splendour during the reign of the Maharaja. The fort has a variety of structures that were constructed throughout the years. Some were constructed during the reign of the Maharaja, including the Toshakhana, Khas Mahal, Bastions, Moat, Wells, and Haveli, while others were constructed during the East India Company, like the Darbar Hall. During the British era, some already-existing buildings underwent modifications, while others, like the Anglo Sikh Bunglow, were largely erected. Here is a bell from 1863 that was manufactured in Sheffield, United Kingdom, and used to cast more bells at the time.
