History

With a total length of over 7 km of cave passages, Krem Mawmluh is considered to be the fourth longest cave in the Indian subcontinent. The cave is situated at an altitude of 4,503 m and is definitely for adventure seekers. The entry to this cave is located at a height of 10 feet above sea level. Mawmluh Cave is known for the stalagmite formations and other rock formations that are found inside. Also, one can find a pool inside the cave, which is formed as an outcome of five different rivers discovering their way inside the cave. The entrance is easily found by following the river behind the cement works of the Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited, downstream for about 200 m to a point where the river disappears underground. It takes around 30 minutes' walk across the mountain and many rocky ledges to go to the entrance. The entrance was very narrow and one needs to squeeze to get inside. There are streams flowing inside the cave and some areas of the cave are completely submerged under water during monsoons. The cave is too deep that contain of passages, calcite formations of various kinds, massive caverns, waist deep pools, few meters of belly crawl and few climbs. Also, only 1/4th of the cave receives the sunlight while the rest of the cave remains shrouded in the darkness. It takes around 3-4 hours to complete both the ways. Due to its geographical formation, the atmosphere inside the cave can make an individual feel dizzy and thus, it is recommended that people suffering from acute respiratory disorders should avoid visiting Mawmluh Cave. Guides are available at Mawmluh Cherra Cement factory, Cherrapunji and they will provide suits, boots and helmets before trekking to the cave.
