The native Khasi tribe is to be acknowledged for helping to create this natural wonder. They spotted the Indian Rubber Tree's thick roots growing near their town of Laitkynsew. The Northeast area of India is the only place in the country where these ancient rubber trees can be found, which is why the root bridges are so popular here. The people have shaped the roots into a bridge by 'training' them. The roots are pulled, twisted or braided in the desired direction during this training procedure. However, the bridges must be shaped before they can be utilized. Since the bridge's primary function is to carry pedestrians, it will take at least 15 years for the roots to develop sufficient strength to do so. Only 50 persons at a time are allowed to cross this 200-year-old natural bridge.
