History

Gotsang is a hermitage perched on a hill with two lovely temple structures. The mountain cave where Tantric teacher Gyalwang Gotsang (1189-1258) meditated is the primary shrine. He was the enlightened Tibetan lama, also known as Gotsangapa, who established the Mt. Kailash pilgrimage route and to whom the Drukpa Buddhists of Ladakh traced their ancestry (the current Gyalwang Drukpa being his 12th incarnation). As you ascend from Hemis Gompa, the age-blackened cave is now concealed inside the monastery structure to the left. The cave lies behind the colorful paintings that front the entrance. The foundation of Gotsangapa's alms bowl is allegedly etched on a stone above the entrance.
