Diskit Monastery was created in the 1400s by Changzeb Tserab Zaongpo, a member of the Gelugpa (yellow hat) branch of Tibetan Buddhism. When Tsong Khapa, the founder of the Gelukpa division, died, he was one of his disciples. Although it was owned by Tshe-dbang-rnam-rgyal until the mid-1700s, the monastery was transferred to the Rinpoche of the Thikse Monastery at that time.
