Known as the oldest monastery in Ladakh, the Alchi Monastery is basically a complex of monasteries in the village of Alchi in the Leh district. The complex consists of four separate settlements with monuments of different eras. Alchi is also part of the three villages that make up the Archi Monument Group. The monuments of all three villages are considered unique in style and finish. The paintings of the Alchi Monastery are one of the oldest surviving paintings in Ladakh. The murals in the monastery showcase the rich artwork in the architecture by the Hindu and Buddhist Kings. The complex also houses giant Buddha statues, ornate wood carvings, and works of art.
