Surrounded by a continuous forest of Kodagu and Wayanad, this adjacent sanctuary is home to a wide variety of native flora and fauna of the Western Ghats. About 23 species of mammals found here include sloths, mouse deer, elephants, sambars, barking deer, wild boars, and gaurs. A total of 246 birds, 262 butterflies, 98 dragonflies and damselfish, 40 fish, 49 mammals, 53 reptiles, and 35 amphibians live here. It is also the only protected area of tropical evergreen forest on the west coast of the Dipterocarpus Mesua Palaquium type. The presence of the Gray slender loris (Loris lydekkerianus malabaricus) along with the other five primates is one of the main highlights of the sanctuary.
Aralam is known for its butterflies and butterfly movements, also known as the "Butterfly Land". The reserve is home to the Nilgiri wood pigeon, a restricted range of 12 species and 18 species of birds.
