History

Located near the pier and just 1.5 km from Alappuzha train station, it is a stop on the way to the town. The view from the top of the ocean waves is absolutely breathtaking from the lighthouse. The location of this Candy Strip Lighthouse was once the busiest port and commercial center in Kerala. The lighthouse lamp was first lit in 1862, by Mrs. Francis Newcom Maltby, wife of a resident of Francis Newcom Maltby. The lighthouse is 27 m high with a spiral staircase made of teak wood. The lamp with a double wick in coconut oil was used at that time which gradually changed to a 1000watt electric lamp in 1960. Even today, the lighthouse is operated manually.
