History

Father Rana Baire Gowda had a dream in which he was told to develop an entire township of Devanahalli in the name of his son Malla Baire Gowda. Devanahalli Fort was built in 1501 by Malla Baire Gowda in the hamlet of Devanahalli. Over the course of 200-250 years, the Devanahalli Fort was the scene of several wars. The fort is littered with relics and debris from the fights that took place here in the past. From 1501 to 1749, the fort was controlled by Malle Byre Gowda and his lineage. Nanjarajaiah, the dalwai of Mysore, captured the fort in 1749, ending a lengthy history of the Gowda dynasty. The fort was owned by Nagarajaiah, who gave it to the monarch, Hyder Ali, soon after. Several conflicts had a place in the fort throughout this time period (1749-1790), and new countries were conquered.Hyder Ali held the Devanahalli Fort in his control when Tipu Sultan took control of it after he had taken it. In spite of their power, the Marathas were still unable to keep up with the Sultans' fights, even though the fort was under their possession for some time. The fort was conquered by the British in the Mysore War in 1791, under the command of Lord Cornwallis, who toppled the Sultanate. For almost 150 years, the British held sway over the fort, which they did until India's independence in 1947.
