Baltal is a pilgrim's campsite located 15km north of Sonmarg on the Sind River at the foot of the Zojila Pass in Jammu & Kashmir. This small valley offers a shorter, higher-altitude alternative route to the sacred Amanas Cave in just one day's journey. Located at 2,743 meters above sea level Baltal serves as a base camp for pilgrims to the Amarnath Cave, 14 km away. Several tents are set up here where pilgrims can spend the night. It can also be reached in about a day on foot from Pahalgam, which is 24 km away. For trekkers, it takes about a day to reach Baltal from Pahalgam.
Known for their scenic beauty, Baltal meadows offer tent accommodation at reasonable prices for both pilgrims and tourists. For the Amarnath Caves, the options available are pony trekking or a helicopter ride. Helicopter passengers must disembark at Panjtarni and walk or board the pony to a cave 5 km away. For trekkers, the 14 km route from Baltal to Amarnath takes about 4 hours on a steep, winding road.
