Raja Ranjit Singh was the founder of the Sikh empire. This
empire came into power in the Indian subcontinent in the early 19th century.
Rani ka Talab is one of the important testimonies of the town built by him. It
is known that the Raja gave out orders for digging two ponds. One was supposed
to be the ‘Raja ka Talab, ’ and the other was to be ‘Rani ka Talab’ to be used
by women for bathing and aesthetic purposes. Both these water bodies were
similar in construction with Lord Shiva Temple situated on the banks of either
pond. Later, the Raja ka Talab was turned into a modern park called Patel Park,
which was known as Company Garden during the British rule. Today, Rani Ka Talab
is a popular tourist attraction. This 400-year-old pond is situated within the
Ambala Cantt and stretches over an area of about four acres. The pond which was
in control of the Sadhus until 1999 A.D is now under the authority and
management of the Indian army. The Shiv Mandir and Devi Mandir along the ponds
are frequented by visitors and devotees alike. The Talab however, remains
almost dry most of the times except the monsoons. You may plan your visit
depending on the seasons if you want to have a quiet evening beside a pond full
of shimmering water.
