History

Sailen Debnath, a famous scholar in Terai and Dooars, believes that the word "Siliguri" means a pile of pebbles or stones. Until the 19th century, the area was also known as Shilchaguri. The Sikkim Kingdom was originally a small farm and later ruled Siliguri until the Kingdom of Nepal's influence in the area. The Nepalese government brought the settlements of Kirati and Nepalese Lepucha to the area. The area currently covered by Siliguri is the southernmost edge of the Sikkim Kingdom, which belongs to the Trans-Morang Zone, which is the intersection of the eastern and western parts of Morang, until the rise of expansion in Nepal. The Bhutanese and Sikkim people use the Pansi Doa River Port, located south of Siliguri, to transport goods and establish trade relations with the mainland. After the British occupied Darjeeling in 1835, Siliguri developed from the status of an agricultural village into a small town and then occupied the entire Duar and Kalimpong areas in 1865. The railway in northeastern India was expanded by the British East India Company to expand the importance of Siliguri in the region. After India's independence and partition, Siliguri became a transit point and an extremely important strategic location. This also led to the formation of the "Siliguri Corridor" after Bangladesh was partitioned by India and Pakistan in 1947.
