History

Jalpaiguri is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal. Located on the Tista River at the foot of the Himalayas, the city is the second-largest river in West Bengal after the Ganges. The geographic boundary of the Chalbiguri area was aptly named "tea, wood, and tourism", and had been under the control of multiple dynasties and countries since ancient times. It is said that the name Jalpaiguri comes from the Bhutanese "jelepeguri", which means a place where warm clothing is exchanged or exchanged, alluding to shopping malls. Another suggestion is that it is a combination of two words, "Jalpai" means olive tree and "Guri" means place because there used to be many olive trees in this place.
According to historical records, the main part called Jalpaiguri today is part of the Kingdom of Kamrupa, which extends to the Karatoya River in the west. This place is often called Duars or Door, which literally means "gate" or passage through Bhutan for trading and keeping in touch with the river plains.
