History

Uttarkashi district was created on February 24, 1960, out of

erstwhile Tehri Garhwal district,  it was merged with the state of Uttar Pradesh in 1949 after India attained independence in 1947.The area now made up by Uttarkashi district has been known since the times of the Rig Vedic period. The Aitareya Brahmana mentions it as the land where the Devas performed sacrifices, and the Kaushitaki Brahmana mentions this area was where Vedic Sanskrithad changed the least. In the Upayana Parva of the Mahabharata, various hill tribes from the hill and mountain region of what is now Garhwal are mentioned as giving gifts to Yudhishthira during his Rajasuya Yagna.

Facts & Culture

Uttarkashi, the headquarters of the eponymous district, is an ancient land with rich cultural heritage and a picture-postcard-like appeal with sweeping mountain views. It is famous for an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is visited by thousands throughout the year. As the name suggests, it's considered to be the Kashi (another name for Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, which is home to one of the most renowned Lord Shiva temples) of the north (Uttar). Uttarkashi is dotted with several temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Goddess Durga, Parshuram, Dattatrya, Bhairav, Annapurna, Laksheswar, Ekadashrudra, etc. It is surrounded by high Himalayan ranges, green meadows, and several hot springs. In winter, it is enveloped in snow. The culture of Uttarkashi District is very rich and vibrant. The folk dances and folk songs sung on auspicious occasions exhibit the socio-cultural values found in Uttarkashi District.
