History

Hrishikesh the "Yoga capital of India" is considered one of the most sacred places for Hindus. The city received its current name from Hrishikesh - Lord of the senses, one of the names of the Hindu God Vishnu. There is a legend that when Lord Vishnu saw Rabya Risi meditating hard, he was happy and gave him his blessings and named that place Hrishikesh. Another legend says that once Lord Shiva got angry with Lord Agni and cursed him. Then, Lord Agni prayed here for redemption, and the area got to be known as Agni Tirth, the sacred place of repentance of Lord Agni or of the God of fire. Others say that the name of the city comes from the words of Rishi (essays, prophets, sacred hermits) and Kesh (Dreadlocks). Because many hermits passed through this place on the road to Char Dham. Usually, they had long hair and washed their hair in the water of the Ganga.
