History

Pithoragarh lineage can be traced to the Puranas age when it flourished under different names. Pithoragarh was an important stop on the Kailasa Parbat route. The ancient religious texts like Rig Veda and Skanda Purana speak of the various tribes that lived in that area. They were probably the first people to establish a human population in the area. The first recorded story is that of the great King of Rajput, Prithviraj Chauhan, who named this as  "Rai Pithora". With time and use, the name became `Prithigarh`. With the Mughal invasion, it evolved even more and its current name of Pithoragarh has become famous. Pithoragarh was governed by many different dynasties and kings. The Chand dynasty took the power in 1790  and built a new fort to show their power. . However, Pithoragarh was soon under the British rulers and made it a Tehsil (an administrative section) under the Almora district for easier supervision. This provision remained until 1960 when Pithoragarh became a district.
