History

The name Mussoorie generally comes from Mansur, a local shrub. In 1803, under the leadership of Umer Singh Thapa, the Gurkhas conquered Gaswar and Dara and founded Mussoorie. Mussoorie Resort was founded in 1825 by Captain Young, a British officer. He explored the current location with Mr. Shore, Dehradun's resident tax director, and together they built a shooting range. East India Company Lieutenant Frederick Young came to Mussoorie to shoot the game. He built a hunting lodge (shooting range) on the camels' way back and became a Dunn County magistrate. He formed the first Gurkha army and planted the first potatoes in the valley. In 1832 Sir Henry Bohle founded the first brewery in Mussoorie called "The Old Brewery". In 1900, with the arrival of the railway in Dehradun, accessibility was facilitated, reducing travel by car. Prime Minister Nehru's family, including his daughter Indira, were frequent visitors to Mussoorie. During the 1959 Tibetan uprising, the 14th Dalai Lama lived in Mussoorie until April 1960. The first Tibetan school was founded in Mussoorie in 1960. Today, around 5,000 Tibetans live in Mussoorie.

It is located about 35 kilometers from the state capital, Dehradun, and 290 kilometers north of the capital, New Delhi. The hill station is at the foot of the Gawar Himalaya. The neighboring city of Langdour with its military camp, as well as the cities of Baroganj and Jaripani, are part of the "Great Mussoorie". Mussoorie is one of the scenic hill stations in the Garhwal Himalaya with exceptional scenery and natural beauty combined with the underlying culture of the local people, including Garhwal, Tibetans, and other religious believers. Mussoorie has green hills, diverse flora and fauna, and the beauty of the Himalayas. It is one of the most popular hill stations in Uttarakhand. Kempty Falls, Laal Tibba, Jawahar Aquarium, Bhatta Falls, etc. they are the most popular with tourists. Shiduqiupelin Monastery is located on Happy Valley Road in Mussoorie and was the Dalai Lama's first refuge when he fled Tibet.
