History

Mukteshwar is a village and tourist destination in the Nainital district of Uttrakhand state, India. It is located 51 kilometers from Nainital and 343 kilometers from Delhi at an altitude of 2,171 meters (7,500 feet) in the Kumaon Hills. Many people still refer to it as muktesar in their own language. Before the area was selected for serum production to protect animals from the plague. The scenic village was known for its shrines and temples. The Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory was founded in 1889 in Pune on the advice of the Cattle Plague Commission and was transferred to Mukteshwar. Jim Corbett a famous tiger hunter and writer mentioned the place in one of his books The Temple Tigers. He even stated the hardships faced by the people of villages in that part of Northern Hills in those times.

Facts & Culture

Mukteshwar is a small alpine town in Uttarakhand, about 50 kilometers from Nainital. Known for adventure sports and the beautiful Himalayan scenery, Mukteshwar got its name from the 350-year-old Shiva shrine, Mukteshwar Dham. Lord Shiva is said to have defeated a demon here and granted him mukti or redemption, according to local legend. Shiva Temple, Rajalani Temple, and Brahmeshwara Temple are among the many ancient temples in this small town. Mukteshwar offers lush green trails and narrow streets and is a popular hiking destination. The popular among being Binsar to Artolatrek, Peora to Almora, Peora to Mukteshwar.. Night walks and camping are also popular. Sitla is a picturesque hill station with a spectacular view of snow-capped mountains and dense oak and pine forests. The magnificent orchards, the evergreen forests, the rolling meadows, and the cabins and buildings built with the old colonial architecture are the main attractions here. The attraction of Mukteshwar lies in enjoying a moment of peace, admiring nature, and listening to the singing of the birds.
