Kotdwar

History

Kotdwar is the eighth largest city in Uttarakhand. As it is located on the banks of the Khoh River, it was given the name "Khohdwara", which means "Gate to the Khoh River". It is one of the main gates of Uttarakhand and is located in the southwest of the state. Originally isolated and little known, it became famous when the British hooked it up to the railroad in 1890. Kotdwar is famous for its famous and sacred Sidhbali Temple, which is 2 kilometers from Kotdwar.

Kotdwar in the Garhwal district of Uttrakhand is also known as the gateway of the river Khoh. This small town is fast developing into a trading center. The city is famous for the Siddhbali temple of Lord Hanuman located on way to Landsdown. Devotees throng the temple throughout the year. Durga Devi temple lying on the banks of River Khoh is also revered by Hindus. Another place famous as a picnic spot is Bharat Nagar that offers splendid views of Kalagarh Dam. Koteshwara Mahadev Temple is another Hindu shrine visited by many pilgrims. St. Joseph church in Kotdwar is one of the largest in Asia. Kanvashram is a site famous for saint Vishvamitra who meditated here. Kotdwar is close to the scenic town of Landsdown and also Corbett National Park, one of the most famous reserves in India. Most of the festivals are celebrated according to the Garhwali culture and traditions.
