History

This temple stands 3,583 meters above sea level, 223 kilometers from Rishikesh, on the banks of the Mandakini River, a tributary of the Ganges, and is a stone building of unknown age. It is not known for sure who built the original Kedarnath temple and when it was built. The name is derived from the word 'Kedara' meaning kingdom and 'Natha' meaning Lord. The Kashi Kedara Mahatmya text says that it is called because the "liberated harvest" grows here. In September, Badrinath will hold many ceremonies to celebrate Mata Mruti Ka Mela. The cuisine of Uttarakhand is similar to that of North India. Some popular dishes are chainoo, ras, kafuli, jholi, and chapattis.
