History

This temple stands 3,583 meters above sea level, 223 kilometers from Rishikesh, on the banks of the Mandakini River, a tributary of the Ganges, and is a stone building of unknown age. It is not known for sure who built the original Kedarnath temple and when it was built. The name is derived from the word 'Kedara' meaning kingdom and 'Natha' meaning Lord. The Kashi Kedara Mahatmya text says that it is called because the "liberated harvest" grows here. The creator of countless pilgrimages, monasteries, and holy places across India, Adi Shankaracharya achieved great nirvana at Kedarnath and marked it as the samadhi behind the temple. There is no head on the idol of Lord Kedarnath. Many ethnic groups with unique cultures and traditions live in the hills of Uttarakhand. The lowlands are occupied by Van Gujjars, a nomadic Muslim tribe and Sikh. The houses and temples remind us of times gone by. Hindi is a widely spoken language in the state in addition to Pahari. The people of this place adhere to their religion, traditions, and customs. From May to June is the KedarBadri Utsav Festival, which is a cultural festival of art and music. In July and August, the Janmashtami Festival is celebrated. This festival is celebrated with many parades, great occasions, and performances. In September, Badrinath will hold many ceremonies to celebrate Mata Mruti Ka Mela. The cuisine of Uttarakhand is similar to that of North India. Some popular dishes are chainoo, ras, kafuli, jholi, and chapattis.
