Haridwar

History

Haridwar is an ancient town in India mentioned in varied Upanishads and religious texts. The city has been mentioned with various names like Gangadwara, Mayapuri, and Kapilasthana. The name of the town, which accurately means that "Gate of the Gods", is mentioned in the Vanaparva chapter of Mahabharatam (famous Hindu Text), where Sage Dhaumya tells Yudhisthira concerning Indian "Tirthas" (pilgrimages), together with Haridwar. 
The famed Chinese saint Huan Tsang mentioned Haridwar as "Mo Yu Lo" in his travel chronicle in AD 629. Then came Timurran, the Turkish encroacher named it as Mayapuri in  "AineAkbari" (written throughout Akbar's reign). In 1868, the "Haridwar Union City" was established, including the villages of Mayapur and Kankhal at that point. It is also the entry point for Char Dham (the four main pilgrim's journey centers of Uttarakhand, specifically Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamnotri.

Places of yoga practice (Yoga ashrams) have now become a popular and inherent part of the Haridwar culture. Almost all of them are located on the banks of the Ganges and are considered the best places for those seeking peace and spirituality. It is believed that taking bath in the Holy Ganges here can purify all the wrongdoings and sins of a person. The Kumbh Mela is celebrated in the holy city of Haridwar every twelve years. It is the biggest fairs that take place anywhere in the world with millions of devotees thronging the city and bathing in the holy water of the Ganges. The people of Haridwar are religious, polite and   God fearing life leading a simple and spiritual life.
