Gangotri is a city and Nagar Panchayat in Uttarkashi County, Uttarakhand, India. It is a Hindu pilgrimage city on the Bajirati River and the source of the Ganges. It is located in the Greater Himalayas, 3100 meters above sea level. According to popular Hindu legends, the Ganges goddess descended here when Shiva released a powerful river from her hair.
