History

Bhimtal lying in the Kumaon hills is an ancient town famous for Bhimeshwar Temple holding significant religious value. According to legends during the Mahabharata era, the Pandavas visited this place and when Draupadi felt thirsty Bhim struck the ground with his mace. Water gushed out from there and supposedly the lake was formed. Thus the lake was named after him. The holy lake of Bhimtal was discovered by the British and was an ideal route between the plains and the Kumaon hills. The place was a halting point for the Tibetan traders traveling for the purpose of goods trade. It is supposed that the place may have been a part of the silk route.
