History

Mathura has a long history and occupies a place in the oldest Indian epic, the Ramayana. Ramayana said that Shaturuna, Prince of Ikshvako, killed a demon named Ravanasura and obtained this place. Later this place was called Madhuvan, with dense trees, then Madhupura, and finally Mathura. The city witnessed its golden age during the Kushanas rule, when it was ably ruled by rulers such as Vashishka, Huvishka, and Kanishka, its art and culture flourished and its economic wealth continued to emerge. Mathura continued to hold a strong central position during the Mauryan dynasty, from the benign reign of Emperor Ashoka to the Gupta period beginning around the 4th century AD. 

 In the 3rd century BC. C., the famous historian Megasthenes described Mathura as a place of great regional importance during his trip to India and also hinted that it was Kṛṣṇa at that time and today the center of worship. Around 400 AD, the Chinese traveler Fa Xian mentioned that the city can be said to be the center of Buddhism and many famous temples; the site of Mathura was inhabited before the 1st century AD.

The school flourished during the Kushana dynasty in the 1st century AD. In the second century, the city was a stronghold for Buddhists and Jains. Between 1017-18, Mahmoud of Ghazni sacked Mathura and was sacked four times between 1500 and 1757. In 1804 the city was annexed by the British.
