History

Kushinagar is an important Buddhist pilgrimage city in Uttar Pradesh. According to Buddhist scriptures, Shakyamuni Buddha achieved nirvana here near the Hiraniyavati River after death. It used to be called Kushavati, also called Kusha in the Ramayana epic, named after the son of Lord Rama. The city has many ancient pagodas and monasteries from the 3rd to 5th centuries. Most of these monuments were commissioned by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, who also built a pilgrimage site in Kushinagar to commemorate Buddha's Nirvana. Kushinagar is among prominent archaeological sites in India. Located 188 kilometers from Ayodhya, Kushinagar is easily accessible from all over the country.
