History

In ancient India, hundreds of years before the birth of Christ, Kaushambi was the capital of Chedi-vatsa janapada, one of the most important janapadas where the Indo-Aryans were divided. Satapatha Brahamana was named after a man named Proti Kaushambeya, a native of Kaushambi. This troubled history of the city was confirmed by Mahabharata and Ramayana, who first sued Kusamba for the site, the third son of King Chedi King Uparica Vasu, and the latter with Kusamba, the son of Kusa.

Kaushambi was mentioned in a trip to France by Chinese tourists, described as one of the most beautiful cities of the time. The city was also an important trading center during the Buddhist period. A deep moat outside the fort was built to keep it safe, with brick walls believed to belong to the Maurya and Gupta eras. General Cunningham and archaeologists conducted an archaeological survey of the site in 1861, confirming that the fort's perimeter wall was about four miles long. Many valuable items were also found here, such as bronze discs, terracotta bronze seals, gold and silver coins.
