History
According to legend, Barsana is believed to have been the residence of Radharani, the consort of Lord Krishna. It is believed that it was established by Vajranabha about 5,000 years ago. The village is situated around Brahma hill and Vishnu Hill. Radharani temple also called Ladliji (Beloved) or Shriji, is the most famous temple here built by Raja Bir Singh Ji deo of Orchha in 1675.
Lord Krishna came to tease Radha with his friends to Barsana the hometown of Goddess Radha. According to legends, father of Lord Krishna and Radha were close friends and there are numerous stories of love of Krishna and Radha in this town. Lord Krishna used to play Holi with Radha Ji to her homeland Barsana with his friends. This tradition is still carried on when the young boys of Nandgaon come to Barsana and play Holi with the girls of the town.
Facts & Culture
Barsana the holy place of Hindus is a beautiful place 124 kilometers from Delhi and 58.9 kilometers from Vrindavan. It is located on the side of a ridge 21 kilometers north of Goverdhan and was formerly known as "Brahmasarin". It is surrounded by mountains on all sides, representing the four-headed Lord Brahma. Varsana or Barsana is mainly the place of the temple of love of Sri Radha Krishna. Temples like Ladliji Temple and Pila Pokhra are the holiest and most popular tourist attractions. Another temple worth visiting is Maan Mandir. Mor Kutir is a place where the goddess Radha and Lord Krishna dance like peacocks and peacocks; Krishna Kund, where they bathe. Other attractions like Bhanokhar Tank, Prem Sarovar, Roop Sarovar, etc.
Barsana is famous for the celebration of the Holi festival in a unique style famously known as "Lathmar Holi". This is a two-day celebration where devotees and tourists from all over the country come to witness the exhilarating festivities and age-old traditions. The festival is also attended by foreign tourists in large numbers every year. Radha Ashtami is another famous festival celebrated with great fervor in Barsana.
