Udaipur was the capital of Tripura for 1170 years. The name of the capital was changed from Rangamati to Udaipur. Udaipur is the oldest capital of Tripura. Udaipur is the most famous town in the state. In the year 1949, after independence, Tripura joined with Indian territory and Udaipur became a Sub-DivisionUdaipur is a small but famous town lying south of the small northeastern state of Tripura. It is also the headquarters of the South Tripura district. Udaipur, which shares its name with the more popular destination in Rajasthan, is very different from the desert city in the west.

Udaipur, formerly known as Rangamati, is the third biggest city in the Indian state of Tripura. The city was the former capital of the state during the reign of the Maharajas. Udaipur is about 51 km from Agartala, the capital of Tripura. Udaipur is known for its many temples. Amongst the many temples in Udaipur, the Tripura Sundari temple, built in the year 1501, is the most popular and most visited temple in the state. The Kalyan Sagar adjacent to the temple is a large lake. The other temple which devotees visit while in Udaipur is the Bhuvaneshwari Temple dedicated to Goddess Bhuvaneshwari. Another place of interest in the Nazrul Granthagar is a public library named after Kazi Nazrul Islam, the famous Bengali poet. Udaipur is also known as the Lake City because of the many lakes that enhance the beauty of the place. All the lakes in Udaipur are artificially made, and some of them are Dhani Sagar, Mahadev Dighi, Jagannath Dighi, and Amar Sagar.
