History

Velankanni is a small hidden village in Tamil Nadu on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Once a port for trade with Rome and Greece, this small commercial center gradually lost its importance. It is a well-known Catholic pilgrimage center, visited by thousands of worshippers for its "Healthy Virgin", also known as the Holy Land of the Virgin Mary. Inspired by the French Lourdes, Vilancanni is also known as the "Lourdes of the East". It has become one of the important Marian shrines in the world

Facts & Culture

Velankanni is a small pilgrimage site in Nagapattinam district. Vilankanni is worth exploring because of his rich culture during his colonial rule. The beautiful town of Vilankanni has almost no tourist attractions like the Church of the Virgin Mary and Vilankanni Beach. Gothic architectural style is a major feature of the church. Velankanni Beach is only a few steps away from the Church of the Virgin Mary, which makes Velankanni one of the few destinations in Tamil Nadu that offers both spirituality and joy. In addition, Velankanni Beach is one of the largest and most visited beaches in Tamil Nadu. People can explore the succulent seafood in the shops on the other side of the coast. In addition to these places, shopping is also something that attracts many tourists to this place.
