History
Thanjavur (formerly known as Tanjore) is known as the royal city of the rulers of Chora, Nayak, and Maratha. Its name comes from a giant Tanjan who, according to a famous story, destroyed the neighborhood and was killed by Lord Vishnu and the goddess Sri Ananda Varianman. Tanjan's last request to name the city in his name was approved. Between the 10th and 14th centuries, Thanjavur reached the peak of its glory, especially during the reign of Raja RajaChola. This land is famous for cultivating many classical musicians and Bharatanatyam dancers. Tanjore, the unique painting style is one of the most precious art in this place. It is also famous for its origins in the Thavil, a percussion instrument used in classical Indian music. Known as the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, it is famous for its ancient temples and exquisite handicrafts.
Facts & Culture
Thanjavur is a city rich in culture and heritage. The city's traditional heritage and rich culture are reflected in the exquisite paintings, Carnatic classical music, musical instruments, colorful festivals, and tantalizing cuisine, which rightly define it as the cultural capital of the Indian peninsula.
The most visited monument in Thanjavur is the Brihadeswar Temple. Historian Percy Brown described its architecture as a "milestone in the evolution of South Indian architecture and art. The temple was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Sivaganga Park is located to the east of the Brihadeeswarar Temple. Schwartz Church and Vijayanagar Fort are famous tourist attractions. Thanjai Mamani Koil near Thanjavur is a group of three Vishnu temples collectively called Divyadesam. It is one of 108 such temples in India. The Chandra Bhagwan Temple, the Bangaru Kamakshi Temple, and the Swami Malai Temple have significant religious significance in the Hindu community of South India.
In addition to the traditional festivals in India, Thanjavur is also known for its two major festivals, the Natianjali Dance Festival and the Karnatik Classical Music Festival. These two festivals represent the cultural richness of the city sex. Natyanjali Dance Festival is a five-day dance festival dedicated to Lord Natraj. The Carnatic Music Festival is held in December and January, bringing together various classical musicians from all over the country. The Tanjavur people are mainly engaged in agriculture and handicraft activities, including making famous Tanjore dolls, bronze statues, artistic bed sheets, silk carpets, etc. Thanjavur painting is an important form of Thanjavur’s classical South Indian painting. It can be traced back to about the 17th century, the time of Thanjavur Nayakas, who cultivated art, classical dance, and music literature in Telugu and Tamil.
