History

Ooty, officially known as Udhagamandalam (also known as Ootacamund, or Udhagai for short), is a city and municipality in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is located 86 kilometers northwest of Coimbatore and 128 kilometers south of Mysore. It is the headquarters of the Nilgiris district. It is a popular mountain station in Niligiri Hills, and the locals call it the Queen of the Hills. It is the summer capital of President Madras. The story of modern Ooty began with Sullivan’s expedition to further explore the Ghats on the side of Ooty. He found that this place is very suitable for living, and could foresee the potential of this place as a tourist destination. He built the first English-style house in Ooty, known as the stone house, which is still one of the most famous tourist destinations today.  In order to improve Ooty's accessibility to the outside world, the British carried out some early development activities, such as paving roads and clearing forests. The British were impressed by the beauty of Ooty and soon became the summer capital of President Madras.
