History

Mahabalipuram used to be a prosperous port in Tamil Nadu. From the 4th to the 9th century, being part of the Pallava Kingdom, it rose to prominence. Mahabalipuram a magnificent harbor is located on the Coromandel coast, facing the Bay of Bengal.  This is the second capital of the Pallavas who ruled Kanchipuram. Mahabalipuram was formerly known as Mamallapuram. The ancient name "Mahabalipuram" of this place has a history. It was renamed Mahabalipuram during the reign of King Narasimha Varman. There is a story behind this. Mamallapuram King Narasimha Varman I was a great and brave warrior. His title was Mamalla, which means "great fighter", so considering the great king and his achievements, the name was changed from Mahabalipuram to Mamallapuram. During the reign of Pallava, great poets, playwrights, artists, craftsmen, scholars, and saints appeared. The Pallavas can be said to be the pioneers and pioneers of new styles of art and architecture. This Mahabalipuram place itself became their field of exploration, and they made full use of the resources. The aestheticism of Mahabalipuram remained hidden until the end of the 185th century.
