History

Coimbatore is an ancient city. Before the 2nd century AD. C., It was the capital of a small Konggunad tribal town. It was used by the first Chora, Karikalan, until the control of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Other great rulers include King Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, and Vijayanagara. When Konggunad, along with the rest of the state, fell to the British, the name was changed to Coimbatore. Today, Coimbatore (Kovai in Tamil) is a significant commercial city. It has more than 60 spinning and weaving mills, and the textile industry is its main industry. It is also famous for motorsports and is a regular venue for events on the Cary circuit.
