History

Namchi is located at an elevation of 5500 feet above sea level. It is 78 kilometers from Gangtok, the state capital, and 100 kilometers from Siliguri, the nearest train station and airport. Namchi is connected to Sikkim and other West Bengal towns. Namchi to Gangtok, Pelling, Jorethang, Kalimpong, and Siliguri is served by Jeeps and buses on a regular basis. Namchi was originally the home of the treacherous Princess Pende Ongmoo, who poisoned Chogyals in Sikkim before being caught and executed for her deeds. According to legend, his soul still haunts the Ghurpisey mountains.

The Namchi pilgrimage center, natural beauties, and biodiversity draw thousands of tourists who come to marvel at the extraordinary beauty of the Rangeet Valley and Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain. Namchi's mythology adds to its enigmatic allure. Another belief is that Samdruptse Hill, known for the 135-foot-tall Padmasambhava statue, is a dormant volcano due to the prayers offered by Buddhist monks who climb it on a daily basis for meditation. Namchi pilgrimage center, natural wonders, and biodiversity attract hordes of tourists who come to enjoy the unparalleled view of Rangeet Valley and Kanchenjunga. The world's third-highest mountain on the Rangeet River attracts fishermen and hikers from Namchi. TendongRavanglaMaenamBorong trail spans 56 days and is a fun place for hikers. Chaonan Mountain, Tiandong Mountain, and Borong Mountain are famous for their panoramic mountain views. At Sanzhu Mountain, visitors can see the largest statue of Guru Padmasambhava in the world. In Namchi, be sure to head to Tinkitam, the natural habitat of rare terrestrial orchids (other orchids grow on trees) and the hometown of football star Baichung Bhutia.
