Layong, also known as the "small mountain pass", is a town and hill station in northeastern Sikkim, India. It is located in Beisijin District, near the border of Tibet. Layong is approximately 9,600 feet (2,900 meters) above sea level and is located at the confluence of the Lachin River and Layong River, two tributaries of the Teesta River. The word Lachung means "small step". The city is approximately 125 kilometers (78 miles) from the capital Gangtok. The Indian Army has an advanced base in the city. Before China occupied Tibet in 1950, Layong was a trading post between Sikkim and Tibet, and it was closed thereafter.
