History

Patiala State was founded in 1763 by Arasingh, who laid the cornerstone of the Patiala Fortress known as Kira Mubarak, and today the city of Patiala will be built around the fort. After the third Battle of Panipat , the Marathi were defeated by the Afghans, who commanded entire Punjab. The Patiala State had been fighting for power with the Durrani Empire, the Maratha Empire, and the Sikh Empire of Lahore in Afghanistan. Raja of Patiala signed a treaty with the British to oppose Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Sikh ruler of Lahore and became a partner in the process of building the British Empire in the Indian subcontinent. During British rule, Patiala became a state with a 17-gun salute. The rulers of Patiala, such as Karam Singh, Narinder Singh, Mahendra Singh, Rajinder Singh, Bhupinder Singh, and Yadvindra Singh, are respected and dignified by the British. Patiala's domination of the Malva region transcended pure political influence.

Facts & Culture

Patiala is the fifth largest city in Punjab and is famous for its traditional turban, paranda (tassel tag for braids) and jutti (shoes). It was built around a castle called Qila Mubarak (or Lucky Castle), 40 miles from Chandigarh. Qila Mubarak is located in the city center and covers an area of 10 hectares. The castle itself is a model of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture, and each of the 10 courtyards is unique in size and characteristics. Before the completion of the old Motibagh Palace, the bazaar was the main residence of the Patiala royal family, which literally means the Palace of Mirrors. Lakshman Jhula is a bridge across the lake and is the highlight of Mahal. There is also a museum in Mahal, which contains the most medals collected by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, the ruling king of the Patiala Kingdom. Other attractions in the city include Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib, Gurdwara Moti Bagh Sahib, Bahadurgarh Fort and Baradari Gardens. The only festival celebrated here is the "Patiala Heritage Festival", so it is an integral part of almost all Patiala tourist routes. Held in February every year, it attracts music and art lovers from far and near.
