History

The city may be named after Jalandhara, the demon king of Panagawa and Mahabharata. As mentioned in the Vedas, this city was founded by Devasya Verma. Other possibilities include that it is the capital of the Lava Kingdom, the Son of Rama, or that the name comes from the local Jalandhar, which means the area within the water, that is, the part between the Satluj and the Bess. Both Punjab and today’s Jalandhar region are part of the civilization of the Indus Valley. Xalapa and Mohenjodaro are the places where the civilization remains of the Indus Valley are widely discovered. Archaeological exploration in recent years has promoted the ancient age of the Jalandhar area in the Xalapa period.
