History

Bikramgarh was the ancient name of Bhatinda which was later changed to Tanwarhind and finally named "Bathinda" to match the local pronunciation. According to Henry George Raverty, Basinda is called Tanwarhindh (LabbutTwarikh). The first mention of Tanwarhindh appears in JamiUlHakayat written in 1211 AD. In 1004, Mahmoud of Ghazni besieged the local fortress on the northwestern route to the rich Ganges valley. In 1189, Muhammad Ghori attacked and occupied the Basinda fort. The ruler of the region, Prithvi Raj Chauhan, succeeded in retaking the fort after the First Battle of Terrain in 1191. In 1634, there was a battle called the Battle of Lahira (Lahira in Basinda) between Guru Hargobind and the Mughals. Around 1754, the city was conquered by Patiala Maharaja Arasingh, and since then, he has followed the history of the old princely state of Patiala. With the dawn of independence and the merger of Patiala and East Punjab into a department, Bhatinda git the status of a district.
