History

According to Cunningham, the old name of this city was Charitra mentioned by the Chinese pilgrim Hiuen Tsang. The importance of  vaishnavism in the city  increased when Chodaganga Deva built the temple of Purusottama Jagannath and installed the image of the deities. Subsequently,it became famous as the abode of Purusottam and was popularly called Purusottamakshetra. The name was used by Mughal, Maratha, as well as the first British rulers in the official records. The Puri region was also known as Utkal. In fact, in many early British records, this city is known by the name Porree .The Puri region was also known as Utkal. In modern times,  Puri has become the most popular of all the other names in this city.

Facts & Culture

The city is one of the Enchores (four sacred places) of India. In addition to the worship of Lord Jagannath and to the mysticism attached with Puri, it is one of the few destinations in which spiritual salvation can be combined with fun and adventure. The city is studded by many ancient sanctuaries and Mathas(Ashram`s) that have their small woven history attached to Mr. Jagannath. Famous from the Temple of Jagannath, is believed to be the final place of rest of Lord Vishnu. Completing the golden triangle of Odisha along with Konark and Bhubaneshwar, Puri is a great restorer of art and architecture. One of the four dhaamas (more sacred pilgrimages) of the Hindus, the Temple of Jagannath Puri was built in the eleventh century and is the starting point for the famous Rath Yatra from which the English language derived the word "Juggernaut". Puri's clean golden beach is another tourist attraction for surfing.
