History

The name Konark is derived from the Sanskrit words Kona (corner or angle) and Ark (sun), and refers to the temple devoted to the sun deity Surya. The Konark Sun Temple is a Hindu temple devoted to the sun deity built in the 13th century. The temple is fashioned like a massive chariot and is known for the beautiful stone carvings that cover the whole structure. It is the most famous tourist destination in Orissa and has been a World Heritage Site since 1984. It is located in Konak Village, 35 kilometers north of Puri, on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Konak Temple, often called the Black Tower, was built in the middle of the 13th century by Raja Narasinghs DevaI of the Ganges Dynasty. The temple has a unique architectural style, built in the form of a chariot, driven by seven horses on 12 pairs of decorative wheels.

Facts & Culture

The Konak Dance Festival, held from December 1st to 5th, is one of the country's most prominent classical dance events. With the beat of the instructor, the open-air stage with the temple in the background comes to life, transporting the audience to the magnificent heyday of the Sun Temple. Every year in January, hundreds of devotees bathe in the sea and worship to the sun deity during the Chandrabagha Mela. The Ramchandi Temple is located on Ramchandi Beach, some 6 miles (10 kilometers) from the city, on the banks of the Kusabadra River, which runs into the Bay of Bengal. Beaches in Konak and neighboring places are well-known for their festivals.
